Egypt and US Discuss Developments in Sudan, Libya and Horn of Africa

Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty and US President’s Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos discussed developments in Sudan, Libya and the Horn of Africa during a phone call on Monday.

Focus on Regional Security and Stability

The two officials stressed the importance of continued coordination on developments in Sudan, Libya and the Horn of Africa, while supporting political and diplomatic solutions to ongoing crises to strengthen security and stability across Africa.

Egypt Reaffirms Support for Sudan

Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the preservation of its national institutions. He rejected the creation of parallel entities, called for the delivery of humanitarian aid and stressed the need for an inclusive, Sudanese-led political process.

Concerns Over Horn of Africa Developments

Regarding the Horn of Africa, Abdelatty stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries in the region and avoiding unilateral actions that could threaten regional peace and security.

He also highlighted the need to provide the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) with the necessary funding and support to carry out its mandate and preserve security gains in Somalia.

Egypt Calls for Political Settlement in Libya

On Libya, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s support for Libya’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity and the preservation of its national institutions.

He called for progress toward a comprehensive political settlement through a Libyan-led process, paving the way for simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections, ending political division and supporting the Libyan people’s aspirations for security and stability.

US Praises Egypt’s Regional Efforts

For his part, Massad Boulos praised Egypt’s efforts to de-escalate regional tensions and support the unification of Libya’s institutions.
